can i copy a entire partition and put it on a new drive

hi everyone,

i am putting a larger drive in my laptop, i have linux mint 10 KDE setup with all the software i need and running just the way i like it. is it possible to actually copy the entire partition to a external drive then place the partition back into my laptop with the new drive in it, and still have it all setup the way i had it?

basically so i dont have to reinstall everything and set it up again

if this is possible could you please explain how i can do it in the simpliest terms at all please.

many thanks in advance

pete

You should have a look at clonezilla, it is a software for disk imaging and does exactly what you need. You will find documentation on their website.

I'm not sure how Clonezilla handles the situation when the new partitions (on the new disk) are bigger than the old ones.

I would boot with a live-CD and create a tar-archive for all my partitions. Afterwards I would partition the new disk, create the filesystems and then extract my archives to the new partitions. If you use at least the same partition-numbers for the / and the /boot partition it should work, additionally you will have to reinstall the bootloader (which can be done with chroot).

From clonzill's website:

The destination partition must be equal or larger than the source one.
So I would think that it can handle bigger partitions as destination.

Well, then Clonezilla would indeed be a good solution.
