Can Autocad 2004 or TurboCad 12 run in linux?

Hello all,
Is there any distro that is better suited to run Cad programs, also is there any other linux cad programs besides Qcad?
Thanks.

According to the winehq appdb it will run under wine. http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManage...rsion&iId=2459

Thanks for the link that was extremely helpful.

no worries. Try it out and post back the results. That way it will be beneficial to everyone else. Also I will see if I can find another alternative besides Qcad.

jstephens84,
I haven't installed linux yet, I have a couple of books. One is fedora core 4 and the ubuntu. As soon as I get though some of these I will definitely load one and try it. This a great forum. I know nothing about linux, but I learn quick. I hate windozes. Any help on Cad programs would be great!
Thanks.

A Lotta Linux CAD is Out There

Hit your favorite search engine with "Linux CAD" and you will find a lot of CAD programs out there, even some 3D modeling and animation app's. Prepare for a long steep learning curve.

Good Luck, Michael

Here is a compiled list of card programs for linux. http://www.tech-edv.co.at/lunix/CADlinks.html Looks like a fairly long list of cad software. Let us know which one you choose if you do go with a Linux native. That way anyone searching will see your results and success.

I read this link because I was looking at animation stuff and 3D modeling...

fedora core 4
BUT isn't there fedora core 10 now?

jstephens84 11-29-2008 01:42 PM

Yes f 10 is out but I think only in beta form. And for animation you will want to look into blender 3d. That is used for creating 3d animation. They do have one animated video called elephants dream. Pretty good actually.

mogrady,jstephens84,
I have Googled the linux cad and found lots of links including the http://www.tech-edv.co.at/lunix/CADlinks.html. Does it matter if these programs are run under KDE or Gnome?

newtovanilla,
I do realize there is a Fedora Core 10, but the Fedora Core 4 book and disk was free. Sometimes starting with an earlier version helps me understand how some of the later version are developed.

jstephens84 11-29-2008 02:43 PM

Depends on what is used. Gnome applications mostly rely on the gtk+ framework while I think kde mostly relies on the qt framework. So it depends on which framework it uses. But they should still be able to run under gnome or kde.

It is that mostly people don't want the extra stuff to be installed so they will look for applications that use a specific framework.

TurboCAD 12 and Wine

TurboCAD 12 will install under Wine, but it dies with an error in the Visual C++ Microsoft package.

So if you were hoping that Wine had been improved to deal with the situation, it has not improved in the 10 years since this thread was started.

maybe it's not a question of "improving WINE", but it's just one of those few cases where a windows program can't be made to run under wine no matter what?

i have heard many people asking for Autocad (and i think also TurboCad) on Linux, so one would think they WINE people would have done something about it, if possible.

other versions of turbocad seem to work just fine.

Microsoft Visual c++, mybe

My guess is that the Wine maintainers don't want to get involved in *CAD, but Microsoft Visual C++ might not be such heavy lift for them and also might solve some other compatibility problems.
