I'm running RH9, which will put the computer to sleep when left idle (usually when I forget to turn it off before going to bed). Whenever this has happened, I have been unable to get it to wake from sleep or suspend mode (pressing keys on the keyboard does not work, though there may be a magical combination that I'm missing). As a result, I have to do a forced shut down by pressing the power switch, which is probably not so good.

Any ideas as to (1) how I can turn the computer back on from this sleep mode, and/or (2) how to disable it?

Use latest ACPI backport possibly with own DSDT instead of APM or use that unfreeze fork daemon pea was talking about.
