Can't see movies on TV via VGA from laptop

Hi
Using Ubuntu 9.04 on a Gateway laptop, I have it plugged in via VGA port on my laptop to my TV, and when I play a movie using Totem or VLC, I can see the movie on the laptop but there is just a black window on the TV in the movie player window. My Desktop appears fine and I can use my TV like a monitor in that respect, but I can't watch any movies.

I've been using Ubuntu for about two years, migrated from MSoft, but in general I am a Linux noob.

Should this work? Is it something with Linux? It works OK in XP, except Im having some sound issues with XP itself.

Any info? I'd really like to watch movies on my TV through my laptop in Ubuntu.

I did this a longtime ago. Play around with the video settings: nv x11 vesa opengl etc... One of these should allow you to see the output on both or one of them. This is usually in the preferences of your program.
