Back with another problem...

I did a successful install of Slackware 9.1 (thanks to eveyone who helped me!) and tried to start xfree86, then I got some bogus error that said "No screen found." So i though, how can i see the console text and not the GUI?

Well, I burnt a copy of the newest Knoppix live release and it booted fine..but now my monitor is black. I can't see ANYTHING. Again, i could see all the console stuff fine...

Am I not doing something rigth or is my monitor broke? For the record, its an old IBM monitor I got from my girlfriend.

Did you try running XF86Config?

The "Screen" is a virtual screen used by X, not your monitor screen. that means you have not configured X, Try sharpie advice.

In Slackware, if you're using XFrees86 (not Xorg) there is a nice curses based tool: /usr/X11/bin/xfree86setup. Try running that, answering the questions, and then startx again.

What about the same problem in Knoppix? I'm less than familiar with both distros, but what GUI does Knoppix use?

It doesn't have much to do with the GUI, but the Xserver which is the backend for all Linux GUIs. It looks like a similar problem is happening in Knoppix: your monitor specs is probably not being detected correctly and therefore not working. You'll need to either edit /etc/X11/XF86Config by hand or use a CLI tool to do it.
