Can't open terminal as non-root

I have recently installed Gentoo 2004.2 with kernel 2.6.7 - everything is pretty much working fine except that I can't open a terminal if I'm logged in as anything but the root user. I have a feeling there is something small I'm overlooking. The problem I have is that if I attempt to launch aterm it opens and then disappears instantly. Meanwhile, Xterm and Eterm don't launch at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. It scares me to have to log in as root to do anything!!

I will assume you mean an X Windows terminal.
You probably just need to issue
xhost +
as the user you are logged in as.

hmm... I'm a little lost by that. It occurs anytime I wish to open up a terminal windows like xterm, aterm or Eterm.

I'm not familiar with xhost +

sorry

Check if the user is part of the tty group. Open up /etc/group and append your username to the line that starts with tty. Change this:
Code:
tty::5:
...to...
Code:
tty::5:username
Also check the pty support is enabled in your kernel configuration.
