can't mount windows ntfs

I have configured suse to boot windows via grub by default however it cannot boot. Only suse can boot.

I know it still exists.

 fdisk -l | grep NTFS 
/dev/sda1               1       49720   399367867    7  HPFS/NTFS

But I am unable to mount any ideas?

The device '/dev/sda1' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS.
Maybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a
partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around?

I had windows xp & ubuntu 8.04. In /etc/boot/grub/menu.lst I added entry

This is not for grub2 which is default in ubuntu 10.04 & later.You can use 'gparted' application to check your partitions .

It is possible that windows was not properly shutdown then its partition is locked & can't be forcibly mounted. Then you have to boot into windows from grub & run 'chkdsk' on all drives c:,d: etc.

which version of open SUSE are you using ? Does it have grub2 ? You can try 'gparted' application to check your partitions.

Install a 2.6.32 kernel then suse will be able to read windows files

If suse boots then do:
"sudo os-prober"
if it returns error command not found
"sudo apt-get install os-prober"
and rerun "sudo os-prober"
"sudo update-grub"
reboot
