That solution (integrating several .bin packages into a .deb file) at first sight seems to be for the intermediate Linux user. But tomorrow I 'll give it a try.

Thanks.

I don't know if you have been or not but it is generally a good idea to note the changes you make to your system so that you can undo them.

I would try to remove any manual chonges you have made before you try it.

Also, you might look for those instruction specific to your system. I did see several copies of them in the brief search I did to get that page.

Take a look at this link: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-ins...04-jaunty.html.
otherwise the following should work
ln -sf /path to jre-6u14/bin/java /usr/bin/java

I have an Internet connection but it's through a wireless link and prone to disconnections causing corrupted downloads. But even if I had a proper connection, I would still like to install it locally because of the convenience it offers (e.g. possibility to begin the Installation instantly if you have the CD-ROM or external HD...)

Therefore I will try the second suggestion:

ln -sf /path to jre-6u14/bin/java /usr/bin/java

I've taken a look at How to install jre in Ubuntu 9.04 at ubuntugeek and the explanations look fine.

Consequently, it's very likely that I'm missing something somewhere whether it be a line in a config file or a necessary step in the process.
I will try until I find what I was missing and post it here when I find it.

Thank you.
