I have an Internet connection but it's through a wireless link and prone to disconnections causing corrupted downloads. But even if I had a proper connection, I would
still like to install it locally because of the convenience it offers (e.g. possibility to begin the Installation instantly if you have the CD-ROM or external HD...)
Therefore I will try the second suggestion:

I've taken a look at How to install jre in Ubuntu 9.04 at
ubuntugeek and the explanations look fine.
Consequently, it's very likely that I'm missing something somewhere whether it be a line in a config file or a necessary step in the process.
I will try until I find what I was missing and post it here when I find it.
