Can't install Ubuntu

I really need some help. I'll try not to kill you with my inexperience.

I've been trying to install Ubuntu alongside Windows XP, without success. These are my basic stats:

/dev/hda IDE1 master 19.07 GB (4.10 GB free)

/dev/hdb IDE1 slave 74.53 GB (22.55 GB free)

512 MB RAM

I'm using the x86 desktop CD.

When I attempt to partition either of the drives, I get this message: "failed to create enough space for installation".

I really must be missing something, since I'm sure I have enough space. Any ideas?

Thanks!

You need the space as truly free - i.e. unallocated. That means not currently allocated to another partition.
I'm guessing your free space is within other (Windows) partitions. With the latest Ubuntu you get a "slider" to adjust the current partition so you can free up some space for the Ubuntu install.
Make sure you have the 6.06 CD.

Welcome to LQ!

How are you trying to partition the drives? Try using the default option to install to /dev/hda. This will delete the data on that drive, and create the correct partitions for Ubuntu (/ and swap).

Are you trying to resize the existing partitions?

I hope this helps
