Can't get to graphical mode

Hi everyone. This is my first time here, so forgive me if I'm not posting in the right place and for my bad english.

I installed Mandrake 9.2 about two months ago and was on my way yo understandig a litlle bit of Linux until today. After two weeks of not using Linux, I turned on the PC, selected "linux" on Lilo, it started to load as usual but then the loading screen disapeared and I was left on a the bash, with the black screen and it only said:

Mandrake Linux Realease 9.2 (bla bla)
Kerner 2.42.22-(blabla)
localhost login:

On this point all I could do was login as my user, or the root, but I don't know how to get from there to the usual KDE desktop that should have loaded as always, instead of the bash.

Thanks for your time!

Login as user, then su to root.

Try 'init 5' (without quotes) or 'startx' or 'startkde'.

Another thing to mention is that Mandrake 9.2 is way old, some fairly recent hardware might not be supported under it.

If you say it happened like that, you might wanna check if your / partition is full. Run

df -h

from comnsole.

Use su to root for the init 5 command, but don't try to run xserver as root. In your user account type startx and see if it starts, if not check the output for errors.

I tried everything that you said, but it doesn't work. What uncle Theodore said made me remember that before all this happened, I installed a new 3D card (not new, really... a Radeon 9500), but as with Windows it worked well, I thought there was no problem.

The errors I got where:

When using "startx": fatal server error= no screens found
fatal IO error 104 on Xserver
When using "startkde": cannto connect to Xserver
When using "init 5": nothing happened. Then I tried "init 1", a few things came out and when prompted again, I put "init 5" and it got me just where I was on the beggining, so I guess that the step "init 5" is where the problem is.

Looking at this I would say that my graphic card is the problem, right? I don't know what the Xserver does, but I guess it has something to do with that.

So what should I do? Get the newest version of Mandriva to make sure the 3D card is supported and make a new install of the OS?

That is not a bad idea.

If you install a new card, you should reconfigure your X server. I think, under Mandrake the command is something like xfdrake, or try xf86config

Thanks for your answers guys! I decided to try and reconfigure it just to see how it's done, but I'm already downloading the last version of Mandriva, so I'll install it later.

Thanks for responding me.
