Can't delete files that are in the trash

I'm new to Linux and I just installed Fedora Core 5 (2.6.17-1.2139_FC5) a few days ago. I also installed xmms to play some mp3 files. I have the files on a CD-R. I had the files in a folder called <b>music<b> in my home folder. I later moved the mp3 files into the trash, once I tried to empty the trash I get this error:

Error while deleting "/home/mich...rack16.mp3" cannot be deleted because you do not have permissions to modify its parent folder.

I can move the files anywhere, I just can't permanently delete them.

How can I permanently delete these files? How can I transfer files (of any type) so that this does not happen again? Am I missing a fundamental idea about how Linux works?

log in as root

open a file manager

right click on /home/sam/Desktop/Trash

click properties

goto permissions and give yourself permission to use your trash bin.

log out

[edit]DON'T use the GUI as root, it's a nasty habit and
hard to get rid off![/edit]

Hi, and welcome to LQ!

If you copied the directory with the files from a CD-R chances are that
the directory stayed r-xr-xr-x in the process. To be able to delete the
files run
chmod u+w <directory>
from a console (I don't use Gnome so can't tell you how to it with
Gooey methods).
