I'm really not sure how it is supposed to work but on my EEE if I set to boot from USB first it doesn't boot from a USB stick so I have to plug the stick in, reboot the machine, go into BIOS and change the hard drive order to boot the USB stick first, then save and boot.

Finally got the USB drive working using Unetbootin. Not sure why it is working now.
