Can't adjust screen resolution

Have just installed my frist linux os and the screen has a big black border around it. Set the res on install to 1024x768 & this is displayed in display settings. If I run xrandr in a shell tool it only shows 640x480 available.
xorg.conf has "1024x768" "800x600" & "640x480" available.
Have search the web but nothing I've found works.

Any ideas cos it's really hard working with such a small screen.

Please show us your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file and /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

Are you using a proprietary driver such as Nvidia? I don't think it will allow you to change the resolution...

AFAIK the NVIDIA drivers provide a separate control panel which allows you to set the screen res. Look for something in your menus that says "NVIDIA X Server Settings", that should be it.

What distro are you using? E.g. Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, etc.?

I encountered the same issue before I installed a video display driver compatible with my display adapter. When my system could not find a compatible video driver it dropped into the default VGA driver with 640 X 480 at, as I recall, only 16 colors.

Hope I've done this right. not only new to linux also new to forums. I'm running freespire based on ubuntu. my graphics are onboard intel 82845g driver selected is v4.I'm attaching (fingers crossed) /var/log/Xorg.0.log & /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I had a similar problem which I was able to fix by running /usr/bin/jockey-gtk. It magically went to the internet and found a new NVIDIA driver. In Ubuntu the program is called "Hardware Drivers" and is in the "System>Administration" menu.

Sorry, but you haven't attached anything. If you have a hard time with that, you can use a service like http://pastebin.com/ and paste the files there, then provide us the links.

That's not the full /var/log/Xorg.0.log file. You can please pastebin the complete one.

Try it with this command:

That's the trouble with most Debian based thingies. Nothing is standard.

Ummm... Pastebin the full /var/log/Xorg.0.log file before you create a new xorg.conf file.
