Can't type in Xubuntu

Just installed Xubuntu, and aside from one mysterious failure of xserver (the recovery mode xfix fixed it) I haven't had many major problems yet! Very unusual for me and Linux...though I usually jump right into Gentoo or Archlinux, so maybe that's to be expected when I use a distro like Xubuntu.

Sometimes a window (especially the Opera browser) won't let me type in it anymore or use the page down/up keys etc. If I switch the focus off of that window and type something then return focus to the Opera window I am able to continue as normal. Any clues?

It's on an IBM Thinkpad R51 laptop if that makes a difference. It doesn't happen on the windows installation, though sometimes the mouse nub (between 'g' and 'h') will stop working on Windows...but not on Linux. Doesn't sound like a hardware problem to me since it 100% of the time is fixed by switching focus off the window.
