Can't start Linux, black screen

I've been running Mint 18 for a few months and now can no longer access it. The problem started with the following error:

Code:
Your session only lasted less than ten seconds ... etc.

mdm[1641]: GLib-CRITICAL: g-key-file-free: assertion 'key file !=NULL' failed
I've tried the following:

boot to an earlier kernel - same problem
recovery mode - same problem
sudo services mdm stop - returns 'services not found' error
sudo apt-get install cinnamon - returns another download error

mount -o remount,rw /
apt-get purge mdm
apt-get install mdm - errors downloading and resolving urls

Now it is just a black screen of death on startup. Is there anyway to recover my OS or am I stuck with Windoze forever?

Thanks in advance.

Hi buksida,

Welcome to LQ!

So, when you boot up it winds up with a totally black screen? Why don't you try waiting for about five minutes to see what happens.

Solved it finally ...

Booted normally, hit ctrl+alt+F1 to get terminal up, logged in as root then:

sudo apt-get install cinnamon

Rebooted and the ten second session error was gone.

If you boot to recovery mode I don't think it loads the wifi driver so can't get online to download anything.
