can't set up apt to use proxy
Hello world,
I am having problems setting up apt-get to use the proxy server for the university I work for Red Hat Enterprise WS3. I have read the post titled "please read this before posting" which directs me to a thread about installation at the start of the newbie board which describes how to download the rpm for apt.
Firstly I'm not sure if I've actually got the right version since the links all refer to Redhat rather than the enterprise releases. However, I downloaded the rpm for red hat9 and typed the following command at the prompt as instructed:
>apt-get update && apt-get install synaptic
I get the following:
0% [Connecting to ayo.freshrpms.net:80 (193.1.193.67)]
The computer then times out after about a minute.
To me this is commucation problem, I found a post telling me gow to edit apt.conf to use a proxy but I don't have the info to apply it.
I realise this has become a bit of a ramble so what I want to know is:
1) How do I find out the numerical ip of the proxy server (all I have is a url link to a file of type proxy.pac)?
2) How do I find out what port the proxy uses?
I've only been using linux for about 3 days so if somebody could find the patience and goodwill to explain all this in idiot speak to a very confused newbie I would appreciate it.
