can't seem to get the bootsplash to work in gentoo

Ok I installed gentoo...but when I boot up and kernel starts to load, the bootsplash doesn't seem to work...there's nothing but a buch of text going through...I was wondering how you could fix this

note: I compiled my own kernel instead of using genkernel
heres the grub.conf

default 0
Timeout 30
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz

title=Gentoo Linux 2.6.11-r3
root (hd0,0)
kernel /kernel-2.6.11-gentoo-r3 root=/dev/hda3

well for starters there's absolutely no reference to the bootsplash initrd... did you read the documentation for configuring it with grub??
