Can't run programs and network not visible
 

Ok everyone, I'm a serious newbie here and I have no idea how to run programs that I have installed. I'm running Mandrake 9.1. I figured out how to run .rpm files to install software but once I did that I can't figure out where to go to run the programs. I'm still looking for a nice executable like Windows. does it work that way?

Also I am try to get file sharing working between this computer and my other running win98 SE. Neither computer can see eachother when I am in linux. I have the windows computer providing and internet gateway to this one and that works so I know the nic card works fine. any ideas?

This is assuming you mean using the command prompt

to see if a program is executable, you can type 'ls -F'

the executables are marked with *

for other similar information, type 'info coreutils'

'info' by itself will give you a list of all sorts of infomation.

to start a program in a directory, you'll probably want to add ./ to the front of it so you don't accidently run something in your path instead of the file in that directory.

In X, you'll just have to get used to the different icons and using the menu's is probably the best way to do that. Then, just click on them (or double click if you have it set up that way)
There should be a help icon on the bottom of your screen to assist you with using your desktop.

for your 98 box, make sure samba's installed (you can install it off the disks using mandrake control center), then use mandrake control center to configure it.

Thanks for the tip about running programs, that's working now. I still can't get the network working though. I have configured samba on my linux computer. Are you saying I have to install it on my win 98 computer too?
