I have samba server running to show my windows info. I have total access to all files on the samba share except html documents. When I copy an html document to the samba share and try and read it from there i get the error message 'Cannot find <filename.html>, make sure the filename is correct...etc...' Any ideas why this would be happening? I'm puzzled as i can access all other file formats without difficulty. I tried opening internet explorer and browsing to the file that way but end up with same results.

What about viewing the html source, have you tried viewing in a text editor instead of just a browser like IE or Netscape? If so, does it still give you the same error?

I can send it to notepad and view it no problem. But just clicking on it in the directory gives:

"Cannot find the file '\directory\mypage.html'(or one of its components).Make sure the path and filenames are correct and that all required libraries are available."

So its like the path to the file is not right. Very strange. I tried saving another html document into the shared directory using 'save as' from the file menu thinking it might save it differently but it made no difference.

You know, I get a same type of error when I try to view a HTML document from a floppy, but I then hit ok on the error and it launches the page to view in Netscape okay then.
Have you tried just opening IE or Netscape and then typing in the local address manually?

I know if you type it in manually, it should look something like this in the address field,

file:///C|/whatever the path or file here.html

The line after the C or D, wherever it is stored is a pipe, the thingy above the backslash.

Hope this works possibly.

Nope, no luck. I tried typing it in manually step by step through various folders. It will open and display the the contents of each folder fine in Internet Explorer, then when I give it the html document path in the folder it gives the error. I tried it on another windows machine on the lan here and it gave a different error. Said that security would not allow the opening of the file or something. So now I'm thinking that samba maybe has a flag somewhere set that is reacting to the fact that the document is html.....the plot thickens....

Well I think its a path problem now. When saving the html doc to the share it creates the link in this format: 'file://LOCALHOST/mp3/mydoc.html' but if i manually edit the link to look like: '\\LOCALHOST\mp3\mydoc.html' then it works. So its the way the link is being interpreted or something.

Mapping the samba share drive to another drive letter and working html docs through the mapped drive solved the problem. I don't know why it must be that way but at least it works now.
