[SOLVED] Can't play .mov files in Xubuntu 16.04LTS

Thanks jamison. I don't even know if this is worth the hassle and expense. I have another newer computer at work that plays the .mov file and I rarely need to play .movs on my home computer.

From what I can tell, none of the GX520's have a PCI-e x16 slot (the minitower version has an x1 slot). The problem with PCI and PCI-e x1 video cards is that they tend to be overpriced and/or based off of old GPU's. If you're lucky enough to have the PCI-e x1 slot, maybe you can find a cheap GT220 or RadeonHD 5450 or something like that. Other than that, I would not spend more than $20-$30 on a system that old.

.mkv is a container. Give more specific info on what you've tried converting to (and what the original file holds):

Thanks seasons. I checked the back of the computer and it does have two available slots. But really I'm not that techy and I'm really starting to think along the lines you are that it might be wise not to be putting too much money into this 11 year old computer. If I can find something really cheap then maybe. Otherwise I can live without being able to play .mov files. Appreciate your help.

The information you provided (specifically, the mobo model) leads me to believe you have the desktop variant of the GX520, which means you have PCI slots. It's not worth buying anything new/retail. Maybe you can find a cheap PCI Geforce 8400GS or RadeonHD4350 on craigslist or something.

Thanks seasons. I'm sorry. I was not willfully ignoring your request I just didn't know how to do it. I mean, it's just a .mov file that I have in Dropbox. How would those commands of yours access that particular file? (That's a genuine question. I just couldn't see how to do it.) If you'll explain of course I'll run them.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. It's all my bad. I should've at least said I didn't know how the commands would work.

I took some screenshots of the computer and on the one with the three computers my model is in the middle.

Thanks very much for digging those up, ardvark. I really appreciate it. But they're more than I want to spend. Some of the earlier responders in the post said maybe I'd be able to pick something up for free or a few dollars. As it is this whole computer isn't worth $35 dollars. I attached pix of the back in the previous post, which should give a decent look at the slots.

Oh well. If you come across anything dirt cheap (I'm so cheap!) let me know.

And (will they work in the slots I've got) I'm going to take up seasons' suggestion and search on craigslist. So would I be looking for models like the ones you gave me in the links? (I'm clueless about low profile brackets.)

From what I see (from the screenshots you provided,) it appears you will need a card that is low profile, like the second one I linked to.

Thanks a lot, Ardvark. I'll keep an eye out for one like the latter link but I also found out that my computer plays mp4s well (and so does Openshot Video Editor) so I'm putting this video card thing on the back burner. (And calling this solved.) Thanks again.
