Can't play any other media than WAV
So, I freshly installed my Fedora Core 3 distribution.
I was able to set up all the networking, and all the look and fell stuff. But for some unapparent reason, i can't play any mediafile, other than Wav. Since I can play Wav files, my Soundcard is working fine, but neither simple mp3, nor Videos will play in no matter what player i tryed, starting from XMMS to Helix. When i try to open an MP3 fie in Helix it says: "The player can't play this filetype! Component 'audio/mp3' is missing" As far as i can remember, i installed all the media packages in the installation routine... Well, any suggestions, what i did wrong? |
as far as I remember, Fedora Core leaves out mp3 / wma support due to US patent issues. Refer to their FAQs in order to fix your problem.

Oh
Kay, thanx, but what about all the other files like AVI or MPEG are those also left out due to patent issues?

Well, sofar I havnt come across any distro that would ship codecs for those. Mplayer's site provides them anyways, so that would be the correct place to search for a good media player, and the video codecs too.
