Can't mount cameras, MP3 players, etc.

I have a new install of Wheezy and I love it but I can't seem to figure out how to make devices like cameras, smartphones, MP3 players, etc. appear on the desktop. Other flavors of Linux did this, e.g: ubuntu and mint. External USB drives appear on the desktop but don't always mount. I sometimes have to manually mount them by right clicking on their icon and selecting MOUNT. This process takes a long time also (long delay before files open with Thunar). The system also finds USB printers.

I have installed HAL and Pmount and have checked and refreshed Udev in synaptic. There is no entry in /etc/fstab.d.

What function in Ubuntu and Mint mounts these devices? How do I configure Wheezy to make this work?

I also noticed my Xubuntu 12.04 dual boot partition has the same issue. Is this an XCFE problem maybe?

I'm not great with the automounting stuff, but if you have an immediate issue where you need to mount something, you can always do it manually. Type lsblk and you'll probably see your devices, which you may be able to identify by their storage sizes and partitions. Then you can usually just type "mount /dev/sdxn /mnt/mountpoint" where mountpoint is a directory you create somewhere (not necessarily in /mnt!) and x and n are the drive letter and partition number.

Thanks, but that did not help. In the meantime, I discovered that my USB cable was bad, and when I replaced it, I could plug in my card reader, phones, Nook reader , and MP3 player and they would each appear on the desktop, but I still cant't mount them or explore them with Thunar. I get an error (see screenshot attached) and the file manager shuts down when I try to open the file. I can open them with Thuanr on the XUBUNTU side, but I have to open Thunar and right click on the file OR right click on the file from the desktop and select OPEN.

Here's an update: You can open a file from /media/usb0 . I guess this is the name whatever you have plugged in gets; card reader, mp3 player, etc. So whatever makes it possible on the desktop for you to click on a file in Thunar and run it isn't working.
