Can't login to Root

When I try to login to root I get the message "login incorrect". I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 on a Lenovo Z560 laptop. I do not know anything about Linux. When I do a ctrl alt F1 to a command prompt and enter "su" and then the root password it tells me that the login was incorrect. I used the same password for everything so it should be correct. I am able to go into "Users and Groups" and change my user from custom to administrator but su and sudo don't like my password. I reinstalled Ubunto over itself but I got the same results. I am not sure how well reinstalling Ubunto over itself worked because I noticed that Firefox had the same customized setting as before. Do I have to do something else to setup the root password?

The root user is not used in Ubuntu by default, though using sudo with an administrative command should. Also, you should be able to get around this by typing:

Quote:
sudo passwd root
Then enter your password. You will be prompted to create and confirm a password for root, once doing so you should be able to log in with that user name.

Sudo prompts for password

Thank you for the information. I didn't know that root was not used by Ubuntu. I was able to login with my userid and run sudo so I am off to the next problem.

Thank you
