Can't log into GUI.... display config problem

Hi I guess I'm posting in the right section as a newbie.

I'm running Mepis Linux (3.4.3) and I have a Dell 1704FPT Flat Panel Monitor. I went and try to set my monitor setting in Mepis to the right monitor and messed up.

Here's what I did:
- change the monitor from "unknown" to Dell
- change brand from "unknown" to 1704FPT
- click Apply
- log out of session
- restart
- log back in
- display is not quite right as the right side of my monitor turns black.
- went and change the frequencies
- log out
- restart
- log back in
- I'm given a command prmpt asking for my login name

What do I do now to reset my display config back to the original settings?
And once that is done, how do I set it to display higher resolution than 1024x800?

Thanks in advance.

try xorgconfig or Xfree86config. Might try looking under /etc/X11 also. The config for one of those two should be under there.

Thanks but that's the thing I don't wanna mess with xorgconfig because I don';t know what to choose when I get there. I want to know if there's a way to reset the settings back to the default that was there before I messed it up.

Sorry, That is the only way I know of. Try this for future use though. When I go to edit anything I always copy the file and if if a extension of bkup so if I destroy the new file and can just copy back the old config file.

maybe whatever you changed it in backed it up

post the output of
Code:

ls -l /etc/X11/
maybe a backup file of your xorg.conf.

of course if you had edited it with almost any text editor there'd be a backup :)

Using the Mepis Live CD, I was able to log on. ANd from there I could open the config file. here's what's in it:

Where do I go in that file to change my display/monitor settings?

Fredosaurus 07-25-2006 08:15 AM

never mind I can't edit it from there. Anyway I think I'll just re-install the whole thing and call it a day...
