trying to load linux mint 14 to a SONY pcg 9L2P but just hangs after desk top appears

sometimes get error message about :a drive

Computer might be stuffed
loaded xp but got error saying boot files missing

tried linux mint few times took hours to load then had error message, sometimes just hung with white screen (once got to desktop but nothing worked including load to hard drive)

tried linux puppy as thought might be less demanding but just got this error message
"performing a switch-root to the layered filesystem....kernel
panic- not syncin
g:attempted to kill init!"

tried CD's on my other laptop and mint and puppy loaded live and worked well

Hi there,

why that? Mint 14 is long outdated, dead as a dodo! Current version is 17, and Mint 13 is also still supported because it's an LTS (Long Term Support). All other versions are practically cold. Support for Mint 16 is scheduled to end in August.

This could be anything. The description is too vague to get a grip on anything.
Can you boot your "current" OS (Mint 14, that is) from CD/USB as a live system? I remember reading that there were issues with Mint 14 and some hardware. However, if the Live CD/USB of Mint 14 is able to boot, it's probably something wrong with your particular installation. But at any rate, I'd recommend you to upgrade to a more recent version. Now would be a perfect time, as your installed OS doesn't work anyway.

What drive? What error message?
If you ask for help, please supply at least the information you have.

When I put sanyo pcg 9L2P into a search engine it comes back "Do you mean Sony?" I don't think Sanyo has made a pc in a long time.
