Can't get X working

This messgae is in two parts, because it is too long:

I've just installed Debian (30r1) on a new partition, and I can't persuade X to work for me.

I have successfully installed the appropriate nvidia drivers for my graphics card, and I made the changes to the XF86Config-4 file suggested by the nvidia readme.

I had no joy with xf86config so I copied the (working) /etc/X11/XF86Config file from my RH9 partition to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 on the Debian partition (and repeated the changes suggested by the readme), but it still won't work.

The screen flashes on and off a few times with the nvidia logo and then quits. I get the error failed to initialize core devices.

I notice from the log file that there are problems with refresh rates etc, and with fonts. I've messed about (cautiously) with refresh rates and I've tried an apt-get install freefont (and same with truetype) but that tells me no candidate for installation (????).

Below are my /var/log/XFree86.0.log and /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 files.

I'd be very grateful for any help anyone will offer.

Many thanks, reetep.

The 'core device' that appears to be the problem is the mouse.

Have never heard of a mouse being referred to as '/dev/input/mice'. How about /dev/input/mouse or /dev/psaux or /dev/mouse or something more familiar sounding?

Hope helps.

reetep,

when I tried debian, I also had problems with starting X.

I found that it depends which kernel version you've installed - the 2.2.xx (and I understand the earlier 2.4.xx ones) have problems with later nvidia graphics cards.

This was the problem that I had. In the end I had to change the kernel version to one of the later ones, and then use lynx (as in the text browser) to get the latest nvidia driver.

It still needed a lot of messing about to get my desktop looking like anything compared to the mandrake that I also had installed.

Purely by chance, I found out about "the coward's way of installing debian".

If you want to try this, firstly you will need to download and burn a copy of the latest Knoppix. While youre checking this make sure that you note the url's for their forums - there's lots of hint's tips and other stuff.

And make sure you've got all the info available to config your net access.

then boot the knoppix, if it run's OK, then you're half way there, you can config your access while still running the CD version of knoppix (this also helps because when you try to do a "proper" debian install, some of the hardware detection etc can be rather complicated/a pain - if knoppix runs/detects all your stuff then "bingo"), then surf to their forum and just follow the instructions to do a hard disc install - It becomes basically a debian unstable/testing - don't be too worried by the phrases unstable/testing, that's more to do with the age of the packages than actually being unstable.

From there, you can do all the modifications you want, by just following debian instructions i.e. shit like the apt-get sources.list, and so on.

I wish I'd found out about the "knoppix route" first, it would have saved me so much stress.

regards

John

thanks to all for the help. It was the mouse. I remember now that during the installation the installer failed to install the bus mouse driver modules in the kernel. I don't really understand the process fully, but i suspect it might be that.

Thanks for suggestions of solutions, but none worked. I think i'll work on iserting those bus mouse modules.

time to read up on insmod.....

thanks again, reetep.
