Can't get ssh and rsync to work in DSL

I'm running Damn Small Linux on a laptop that I've converted into a digital picture frame. I used this tutorial. I'm having problems setting up the ssh and the rsync. I'm giving this frame to my parents (for their 40th wedding anniversary!) and I want it to be as easy as possible for them to own. Basically, I want to make the frame rsync with a folder full of pictures on my home server every time they turn it on. I have the scripts ready, but I decided to test out rsync and ssh manually before I give it to them and I have found that I can't get either one to work! I can surf the web and ping my server without a problem, but when I try to ssh into my server, it just sits there for a minute or two and then says, "Connection closed by 192.168.1.69" (that is the correct server ip). Anyway, rsync just seems to hang when I try it.

I have an rsync server running on my home server as well as sshd. I can ssh into the box no problem when I'm on other computers both inside and outside my network. Please help, my eyes are crossing from surfing for the answer all afternoon!

I believe you should check iptables rules.

Also check your router -- make sure the correct ports are opened as most deny any incoming connections not specifically requested by an internal server.
