Can't get on to Internet (Cable Modem) with Red Hat 8

I've tried for several weeks now to get Red Hat 8 to access the internet via my cable modem but can't get it to work. I would appreciate any help that anyone can give me.

We subscribe to Cox Internet and have the cable modem working fine on our laptop with Windows ME. I built a desktop and installed Red Hat 8 but can't get on to the Internet.

I installed a NetGear GA302T network card, which Red Hat says is active. I have checked it and it appears to be working. I just can't get onto the Internet.

Any help?

What am I missing?

Thanks,

Jamie

Welcome to LQ

How do you (in windoze) get onto the internet? Do you obtain your info via DHCP, or do you have a static IP, or do you have a PPP connection, or what?

Do you have a router, or are you switching plugs depending on which device you are using?

Cool

I assume it's DHCP. I know that my IP address changes each time I get onto the internet.

I have not yet graduated to a router, that's my next project. For the time being I am just switching the plug in and out of the different machines.

Thanks.

Run through the Control Center, and if all else fails, you should be able to call dhcp directly. First, check to see if your ethernet cards has an IP assigned, or if it's even up:
su -
Enter ROOT's Password, then:
/sbin/ifconfig

And hopefully you'll see something like:
Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:10:60:2E:42:0E
          inet addr:192.168.1.80 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
          inet6 addr: fe80::210:60ff:fe2e:420e/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:208337 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:146949 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
          RX bytes:242276617 (231.0 Mb) TX bytes:15084299 (14.3 Mb)
Mainly looking at eth0. If there is no entry for eth0 at all, then type:
ifconfig eth0 up
And follow it with:
dhcpd eth0

And see how that goes.

Good Luck!

Cool
