Can't get new video card working

I just bought a new Asus ati radeon 9550ge 256mbddr (agp 8x) and cannot get it working. I enabled the ati driver, which says it supports 9550, and rebooted. Once Ubuntu (Kubuntu) was loaded, the screen went blank (black). I tried altering several of the CMOS/BIOS settings, but can't seem to disable the default onboard video card. Which settings should I change? My monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster 941bw, which doesn't appear in the monitor system settings, it gets listed as a "plug n'play".

what happens if you type ctrl+alt+F1 once the system has booted and the screen is blank ?

this commands is to switch from the X server to the system console.

does this change anything? if so, then your problem is in the Xorg configuration : open your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and post it, with the output of the lscpi command

if not, then you'll have to choose another driver
