Can't get Mplayer to play wmv via Mozilla Thunderbird
 

I will not tell you how many hours it took for me to finally get Mplayer loaded. It was done through Suse one click finally after trying the .rpm and etc. Finally it's loaded and plays just fine and it will open and play wmv files however I can't get the wmv files to open via Mozilla Thunderbird. I've tried the 'open with' with every thing I can find. Obviously I'm not doing something right. Please remember I'm a newbie and be kind.

I think you would need mplayerplug-in for the browser, then it will launch mplayer inside the browser and play - like the flash plug-in.
I don't know the name of the package in Suse, but the name should be similar.

Are you saying if I get the plug in for Firefox (browser) then it would work for Thunderbird (e-mail program)?

Thunderbird (e-mail program) is asking what player to use to play wmv files...I just don't know how to tell it Mplayer is the one desired.

When faced with this problem, I usually type "whereis <program>", then use the program's navigator popup (in this case thunderbird's) to go there. I.e. "whereis mplayer" gives "/usr/bin/mplayer", so just navigate there.

...but it does give you the opportunity to select the program to use - Quakeboy02 described it.

And: No - I'm not saying that the plugin would work there too - in Thunderbird (or another E-Mail program) you can select the program which is to display the file directly. No plugin needed.

Banging around with KDE 4.1.1 and discovered that wmv will play in Thunderbird e-mail. (default GNOME) All is well. :cool:
