Can't get movin' with Netscape....
 

After quite a long time I finally got my modem working and was able to get online. Problem is, when I open netscape and try to go somewhere, I get the following error: (sorry, kinda long)

"Netscape Error:

Warning: The following hosts are unknown:

home.netscape.com
home6.netscape.com
internic.com

This means that some or all hosts will be unreachable.

Perhaps htere is a problem with your name server? If your site must use a non-root name server, you will need to set the &SOCKS_NS environment variable to point at the appropriate name server. It may (or may not) be necessary to set this variable, or SOCKS host preference, to the IP address of the host in question rather than its name.

Contact your system administrator.

I think I understand that netscape is trying to find the primary and or secondary DNS for my ISP, correct? Problem is, in windows I set up my dial-up with "server assigned name server address". How do I tell netscape in linux that the DNS is server assigned? Or am I even on the right track? Your help is appreciated.

Open your Netscape and go to either "File" or "Edit", I can't remember for sure which one. Then "preferences" There you will be able to edit all you ISP info. You also will have to do the same thing in the mail composer if you want to use it. Just click on every tab you see and enter the appropriate info.

Not the problem. Did all that. They're the same options you have with the windows version of Netscape. There is no place WITHIN NETSCAPE itself to enter DNS info for your ISP.

I know you can modify the nameserver in the resolv.conf file but, if it's assigned by the server, what do you enter? 0.0.0.0???

Anyone else wanna give it a try? Something other than the obvious will be greatly appreciated!

What ISP you using? Yeah, you need to edit /etc/resolv.conf to add them, they might be server assigned under Windows but you'll get assigned the same ones each time!

Thank you for the response. I use Quantum - a small ISP in Maryland. Cool, didn't realize they were static. Found them with winipcfg. Will give that a try. Thanks agian.
