Question Can't get Dump to back up my system - says my DVD drive is read only.

I would like to learn how to do a backup to my system. I have tried to use Dump, but receive complaints that my DVD drive is read only. Not true, of course - I just downloaded version 17 of Fedora and wrote it to my DVD without a problem. I then examined the content of the disc and all seems right. I would do a screen dump here to show exactly what happened during the conversation, but I don't know how to make a copy of what's in the screen (tell me how and I will show you).

Try dd:

Code:
~$ dd if=/my/system of=/dev/sr0 bs=512
Or if the partition size is over 4.7Gb you may need do a multi-session, you can use "growisofs" (this one I have not yet tried but it should work.) Read " man growisofs".

Hope that helps.

Goodluck.

Try one of these; should be easier

If you're really using dump http://linux.die.net/man/8/dump, that's pretty unusual these days.
