can't get .AVI files to play in mplayer (using SUSE)
hello, everyone...
I successfully installed Linux Suse 8.2 (yea, I know, not the most recent version...but my roomate had it on CDs...so...) about a week ago and I must say that I'm quite impressed...there is, however, a small problem that is bugging me - namely, I can't get mplayer to open the .AVI files... here's what I get when trying to launch ANY AVI movie: --- FATAL ERROR! MPlayer interrupted by signal 11 in module:key_events (#after pressing OK, another message pops up): Mplayer crashed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM Recompile MPlayer with --enable-debug and make a "gdb" backtrace and disassembly. For details se DOCS/bugreports.html#crash.b. (#as if this weren't scary enough, after pressing OK I get yet another jolly message): MPlayer crashed. This shouldn't happen. (#go figure...) It could be a bug in the MPlayer core or in your drivers or in your dcc version. If you think it's MPlayer's fault, please read DOCS/bugreports.html and follow the instructions there. (etc) --- I'd be more than willing to follow the instructions tn DOCS/bugreports.html if I knew what this line was actually referring to.... anyhow, ppl, any help would be greatly appreciated...please bear in mind that you're answering to Linux noob thus plain English would indeed be more than welcome (as opposed to fancy high-brow Linux talk I probably wouldn't understand)... yet again - thx a lot in advance, cheers and greets Agathos  |
Let's see if I can help you out *cracks knuckles*. Okay, now I need some questions first, did mplayer come with the installation (as a package of some sort) or did you install it yourself via SuSe package (never used SuSe so I don't know what they are called, but I'm pretty sure it supports RPMs) or did you compile it yourself? I had a similar problem trying to update mplayer with a Slack package. Didn't work so I ended up compiling my own, which worked perfectly. My guess is a compiling of mplayer for your system would work fine. You can download the source at: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design6/news.html and I can help you through the installation if need be. Hope this helps, and I'm glad you like Linux so far!

MPlayer came with the installation...
hm...recompile the mplayer? at this early stage of my Linux career? you're sure this is gonna work? :D isn't there an easy way out? :D ok, downloaded the bastard (MPlayer RPM Packages for Red Hat Linux 7/8/9...waiting for your commands :-) (actually this should be quite informative...I've always wondered how one installs programmes on Linux :) ) cheers and many thanx, GT_Onizuka Agathos |
Ok, you said that you are using SuSE 8.2 and mplayer crashes. Since open source tends to evolve and mature over time, did you try upgrading your copy of mplayer to the newest version? That is the first thing I would do.
It looks like your gonna have to build from source though. Link: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design6/dload.html |
do an online update if you haven't already, suse may have a fix/new version available

Oops, wrong thread (Using Mozillas tab feature and clicked wrong one)
|
and if you start using apt4suse, there is a package available (mplayer-suite) that will pull in all the required codecs and assorted dodads needed.

I know that issue in Suse.you can't watch avi in Suse because of the codec.I e-mailed to them while I was using Suse and they said we don't put codecs to our OS because of the rights something like that in fact you can hear the sound, but no picture!I think only AVIPLAY can play AVI and XVIDs in Suse Linux or you can download codec for mplayer

Quote:
$ rpm -ihv name_of.rpm Some bars will show progress of the installation and you should be able to run it fine by typing $ mplayer name_of.avi And it should run fine. If you want a GUI, you have to install skins (all of which are available on the mplayer website). To run it from the GUI after installing the skins, you run this $ gmplayer And it will open gmplayer and you can do everything you want from there. You may want to try the other suggestions, as they have probably used SuSe before, also make sure you uninstall the current mplayer app, otherwise there might be conflicts. |
you are right my friend, you can watch with mplayer almost all formats movies, but is Suse it won't play!when you try, mplayer says eroor!if you try again,it crushes!I used Suse and I know!

Well the problem isn't SuSe, the problem is it isn't packaged (I suppose the neccessary codecs) with sufficient supplies to run files. If you build your own version it should run fine. It isn't like SuSe has mplayer blocked in any way, shape or form. I do find it odd that they would purposely not include the codecs. Kinda like Red Hat and mp3's. The point is, if you A.) Download the neccessary codecs B.) Build your own or probably C.) Upgrade mplayer, everything should work out fine. It's not the distro (per se) but the software that came with it. Good Luck!

'lo ppl...
I was on vacation so I couldn't write anything in reply till just now...first of all, I'd like to thank all of you who were kind enough to participate in this debate...now, regarding your suggestions about the problem at hand - GT_Onizuka, I tried what u suggested and here is what I got: "error: failed dependencies: mplayer = 1.0pre3 is needed by mplayer-common-1.0pre3-1" now, this doesn't really tell me anything (apart that the installation obviously wasn't successful) and I was kinda hoping you guys could - again - help me out a bit... anxiously awaiting your replies, with many greetings and cheers, agathos |
rshaw, how do I do an online update?
