Can't find GRUB at boot up?

I need to log into runlevel 1 through GRUB, but I don't know how to get to GRUB. I need to change my home directory because right now I can't log into any user.

To get to GRUB, which key do I press and when? I've tried <Esc> and <e> at various points in the boot up process and nothing happens. There is one screen, black with MBR written in white, that I suspect has something to do with where I need to be, but I can't figure out how to get the screen to stay there! The boot up continues on to the ubuntu logo loading and then to the login screen.

I'm not familiar with computer terms so please be very specific if possible... thanks!

I'm running ubuntu on my new Dell mini 9.

I am stuck at the first step, again. I press <Esc> to get to GRUB as soon as the machine begins to boot up, and nothing happens. MBR will come up on the black screen, sometimes followed by 2FA:, but then it always moves along to the ubuntu logo loadscreen.

hi

if you have a graphical gfxmenu grub...the safest option is to press the escape key...when the animation shows..for grub menu...then go into text mode.

append 1 (or 3) to end of kernel parameter lines and press enter
(takes you back to text menu screen)
press b to boot

good luck
