can't edit or make changes to the smb.conf file!

When I try to edit and make changes to my smb.conf the system tells me its read only
I even tried to log in as SU thinking this would help but it didn't. I need to make these changes so I can see
my networked XP machines...what am I doing incorrectly? Can soneone point me in the right direction. I'm sure I have overlooked something.

Tink

I'm sorry for being such a noob but I have no idea what you mean by that.

Just open a console and write "ls -l /(where your smb.conf is located)". Then post the output here.
