can't edit files over samba

What do I need to edit files over samba? For example, LXDE on Linux Mint DE can do it, but LXDE on Wheezy can't.

When I click a file in a samba share in PCManFM on Wheezy, Libre Office starts to open, then disappears. Other programs just fail to open, or open blank files instead of the one I clicked. I have to copy the file, edit locally, then overwrite it back to the samba share, which is getting tedious.

I'm fairly sure LM is also using PCManFM, so what does LM have installed or configured that Wheezy doesn't?

Thanks

nigel

It sounds some pb with file permissions. Did you check that you have enough read, write and execute permissions on files that you want to copy/modify?

Like I say, I can overwrite the files. The share is mounted the same way on LM and Wheezy (by smb://server/share in PCManFM)

Did you check your smb.conf in Wheezy for differences from the one in Mint?

or your smbusers?

They are clients. The samba server is the same one, and its running Lenny. Windows and Mac clients are also able to edit over samba. I don't think there's anything wrong with the samba server, its something missing or not configured on Wheezy/LXDE.
