can't connect using wvdial or kppp

hi,

i ran scanmodem on my computer, and installed the
slamr driver for my modem.
i try connecting to the internet using kppp, but the modem hangs up after trying to start pppd, and i get this message:

timeout expired while waiting for the ppp interface to come up.

this is the ppp-logfile :
Oct 5 23:08:59 localhost pppd[3027]: pppd 2.4.3 started by root, uid 0
Oct 5 23:08:59 localhost pppd[3027]: Using interface ppp0
Oct 5 23:08:59 localhost pppd[3027]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/2
Oct 5 23:09:29 localhost pppd[3027]: Terminating on signal 15
Oct 5 23:09:29 localhost pppd[3027]: Connection terminated.
Oct 5 23:09:29 localhost pppd[3027]: Exit.

what should i do?

also i tried connecting with wvdial, but i can't activate the device in NTK CONFIG menu."Failed ... with error 8"

this is the output i get :
[root@localhost ~]# wvdial

You need to edit
Quote:
Phone = <Target Phone Number>
; Username = <Your Login Name>
; Password = <Your Password>
sections I've quoted above with the approriate values.
You may also be able to use your distros setup tool if there is one.
Debian uses 'pppconfig' while slack based & others use 'pppsetup'.

What distro are you using and have you used one of those scripts/commands I mentioned i.e pppconfig or pppsetup? Also it looks like you're using wvdial to connect with and you're doing that as root. That's probably not such a good idea.
But it more important to follow the procedure for the distro that you are using.
From the output you provided it looks like something is wrong with the wvdial.conf you edited and/or the options file in /etc/ppp needs to be looked at.
When you edited wvdial.conf did you remove the < > symbols? and did you provide the correct password username?

can't connect using wvdial or kppp

i've had quite a bit of trouble setting up wvdial in the past, until i finally figured out to uncomment the phone #, user name and password, i've found it best to cd to /etc, and run the following command as root (from something like Konsole): wvdialconf wvdial.conf. this will create the configuration file needed for wvdial and in the correct folder needed for access, then, again as root, open the file and edit it as necessary. this is what my wvdial.conf file looks like:

Modem = /dev/modem
Baud = 115200
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ISDN = 0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Phone = *******
Username = ***************
Password = *********

i've also had to soft link my /dev/ttyLT0 to /dev/modem for everything to work properly. i use mandrake 10.1 official with a stratitec modem, so i had to download drivers to even get my modem to work with this kernel, you may not need to do so. hope that helps, good luck!

With Kppp you got exit #15 on pppd. According to the pppd manpage, the error is:
The link was terminated because the peer is not responding to echo requests.

I believe "the peer" refers to your host. Is your Authentication set to PAP/CHAP? I've had Kppp barf before because I screwed with options I shouldn't have. You can reset Kppp by deleting .kde/share/apps/kppp/* and .kde/share/config/kppprc

Take a look at your /etc/ppp/options file 'noauth' should be enabled (not commented ## out) Also look at 'man pppd' I'm not at my desktop/linux computer today but man pppd should tell you what exit code 10 is. Doing a quick search with google suggest that exit code 10 is related to chap authorization.
