How about an actual error message, and some more information? How are you trying to connect?? (Dial-up modem? DSL? Cable? WiFi?) What kind of network device? Wired or wireless?

Just saying "it won't let me", doesn't give us alot to go on. Please give us some more information, so we can try to help you.

I am using a cable mdm, ethernet connection, it says it can't find an ip address. it comes back failed, however it does see the nic card when i run ifconfig and ifup eth0. not sure if it flavor related or what.

Ok....are you going through a home router, or are you plugged directly in the cable modem? Does your provider give you a DHCP address, or is it a static address?
