Can't connect to Internet
 
I a totally newbie in Linux although I want to learn it badly. Hope someone can really help me here, and thanks.

I have just install a Derbian Linux and seems everything is ok. Problem is I don't know how to connect it to internet. I went to root, and do some pings, no problems. But I cant connect to Internet via Netscape or Konqueror. My setting is as follow:

My Linux PC is LAN with a window xp, and my internet connection is with window xp.
Linux_PC------>WinXP_PC------->Internet.

My ipconfig setting on WinXp:

My ifconfig on Linux:
eth0 inet addr:192.168.0.117 Bcast 192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
lo inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask 255.0.0.0
slo 192.168.0.1 P-t-P 192.168.0.2 Mask:255.255.255.255

Route on Linux:

I'm not sure if the route is correct or wrong, because I know nut about them. I just play around with the numbers. Also, on resolv.conf, I have edited on the following which I know it is wrong but not sure what are the correct numbers.

resolv.conf
search 192.168.0.117
nameserver 192.168.0.117 210.24.xxx.xx

Please help and guide me step by step as this is my first ever touch on Linux. Thanks alot :)

did you enable smth like " bridging " in win. ( i think it's called that )
to forward ip packages ?

I don't think I have set any bridging. I'm currently using a twisted cable to network these 2 PCs.
Anyway, I just try to click on bridge but it does not allow me. Is that the reason, why it is not working?

Previously, both PCs are using WinXP and both doing OK with LAN and internet. Now that I change this PC to Linux, I don't know how to connect to internet. :(
I must say it is not as easy to setup Linux.

ok, i think this is wrong :

resolv.conf
search 192.168.0.117
nameserver 192.168.0.117 XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
-------------

i think you should use nameserver 192.168.0.1

edit: better remove your outside ip number from your post ( like i did ) !

I try on resolv.conf
search: 192.168.0.117
nameserver: 192.168.0.1

also.
search 192.168.0.2
nameserver: 192.168.0.1

It is still giving error message: "Timeout on server. Timed out while to connect to www.yahoo.com"

Any other suggestions? Thanks.

if you type just an ip in your browser like " 68.142.226.50 "
( that's the one from yahoo ) any luck ?

( did you read the edit of my prev. post ? )

sorry..:confused: Not sure what you mean on prev post.

I have change:
resolv.conf
search: 192.168.0.117
nameserver: 192.168.0.1

Same error when I use yahoo IP, http://68.142.226.50

Are my ifconfig and route correct?

i meant " previous post " ( just an advice to remove your IP )

ifconfig is ok afaik.
and i have " search lan " in my resolve.conf

and i cannot say if there is an error in your "route" output.
