It should just work, that's what Network Manager is for.
Did it not ask the network setup questions when you installed?
Did you disable NetworkManager for some reason?

Oh well, open System Settings (via wheely thing in top right corner or wrench).
Network
Wired
Enter the normal stuff - probably just DHCP from your cable box.
Save/close/done.

Welcome to the forums! You don't tell us what specific steps you have tried so far to troubleshoot this problem, so let's start at the beginning...

https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/ubuntu...d-connect.html

For 99% of users those instructions should do the trick, so give it a try and post back with the results!

Did you install it on a Laptop or a Desktop? Is this cable the actual wire from your router to the computer or is a cable company that is also internet provider? please provide more information for better help.

Hello

My best advice is to upgrade to the 13.10 Distro...They have gotten a lot better at autoconfiguration with that one.

And it is advisable to use the 64 bit version of Ubuntu 13.04 or 13.10 on a 64 bit computer

this is not 2005 and 64 bit hardware is common and the software is even more common

Ok. But can I install it in dual boot mode with Windows 7? Will there be any problem if I do so?

Sorry. I am new in this forum. So sometimes my reply is odd. However, I have Windows 7 (64 bit)in my desktop. I installed ubuntu 12.04 in dual boot mode with it. After installation, I went to system settings, network, clicked on wired connection. Then set up IP address, netmask, gateway and saved the settings. It is showing 'connected' status. I restarted my computer. But after that webpages are not opening. Thanks...

There is something not right with the network connection information you provided your system. The ip address, gateway and netmask. Think of it as two computers on one network having the same ip address, there is some conflict that is going on and this is why you can connect to the network but not to the world wide web.

Also you really should not have to do it manually, there should be a service that can figure it out for you "dhcp". My suggestion, now that you have put in a static IP, remove all the information you put in there and see if you can run it again automatically. Sometimes setting up a static ip, then removing it will get the system to auto config your connection again.

Overall, if you post the information everyone needs we can all diagnose any aspect of your connection. The codes may seem confusing, but you take a min. to run them through the terminal, and post what the terminal shows. You can save the output to a txt file, or a simple copy and paste.

until we know how you are connecting to the net .... there is not much we can do

you say " through cable" .
coaxial cable ?
4 meg down 768 up
16 meg down 2 meg up
( cable and NO wireless router should "just automatically work" )
or a DSL cable ?

also are you using a router

wired or wireless ?

as to the os

it is better to use a 64 bit OS on 64 bit hardware
this is not 10 years ago when there was little 64 bit software
