Can't change resolution in text mode.

I have recently startted using SuSE 9.0, and I find the console resolution set to
1024x768 by default, which I find quite small to read comfortably. How can I change
it to 800x600 with my desired refresh rate?

Try to add the parameter vga=789 to your boot in lilo or grub. That's the default for common screens. If you're using a different video driver especially the framebuffer driver, that will make things more complicated. For example if you're using nvidia, that will be video=nvidiafb:800x600. See <linux source>/Documentation/fb/*
