I booted back into rescue mode and ran fdisk -l. Here is what it gave me:

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 1020 8193118+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/hda2 1021 3570 20482875 c Win95 FAT32 (LBA)
/dev/hda3 3571 4789 9791617+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda4 4790 4866 618502+ 82 Linux swap

I looked at lilo.conf and this is what it said:

prompt
timeout=50
default=linux
boot=/dev/hda3
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
message=/boot/message
linear

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-3
label=linux
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.18-3.img
read-only
root=/dev/hda3
append="hdc=ide-scsi"

other=/dev/hda1
optional
label=WinXP

so what can I do now to get it to boot?

Got it! I booted back into rescue and was able to figure out that I needed lba32 instead of linear.

Got that working...redid the dd and added it to windows. NTbootloader displays linux in the menu and will load LILO, where I can choose linux and it boots!

Hooray!
