can't boot linux knoppix from cd - setting paths errors

I am trying to boot from a Knoppix cd and get the following messages:
Loading Linux....
Scanning for USB/Firewire devices....Done
Access Knoppix CD at /dev/hdc...
Found primary Knppix ...

Setting Paths: hdc:media error (bad sector) status=0x51 (DriveReady SeekComplete Error)
hdc: media erro (bad sector): error=3x34 (Aborted ...

And these type errors just keep repeating...

The computer does work with Windows. Is it possibly that the hardware is not compatible?

Please know when replying that I am very new to this.

thanks

Could just be a corrupted CD. Try to burn another one. If that fails, try another live distro. I have similar problems with my CD drive that it fails to boot the Ubuntu Live CD (fails right after uncompressing the kernel), but it's fine with the alternative install CD, and works OK with knoppix.

I suspect my drive to be either somewhat broken, or perhaps with a weird (NEC) chipset which doesn't work well with the drivers in some kernels / under some conditions.

I looks like you have a problem with the media. Thats what "media error (bad sector)" would lead one to believe.

Could be your drive is more sensitive than others... Each unit has it's own tolerance...

Is there a way for me to boot from my hard drive instead of the cd? Or is this not recommended? Or should I just try to reburn a new cd? Should I try something different than Knoppix?

Try a new CD first. Try a different media brand / ink colour if possible.

Some live distros can be installed onto a USB drive, but that's only useful if your BIOS can boot from USB. Should be OK if it was manufactured in th last few years. I did this once with knoppix on a USB hard disk. It was a little fiddly, and took some research and messing about, but it worked.
