C-Media 8738 and Red Hat 9

When i installed RH9 it auto detected the sound device i have
so i figured yayya id have soudn with no problem.. Not the case
when i clicked test, i heard nothing and when i pushed No
to did i hear the sound, it said my system would be without
sound but it should work cause it deceted what i have.
My question is what should i check, and/or how do i compile linux
drivers so i can try reinstalling the drive. Keep in mind this is
my first time ever using any linux, so details would be great.

I have a WinXP Pro / Red Hat Dual Boot with GRUB, same HD
XP on NTFS, and RH is on EXT3.

a good setup for linux. I should of checked that first but i didnt think it would be a problem
