Bypassing the login GUI

Hi,

Is it possible to bypass the login GUI when starting Linux?

repo 11-02-2009 07:23 AM

Do you mean auto login in GUI or boot to the CLI ?

Hi Repo,

In answer to your answer, I would like it to auto log on. This is related to the other post you replied to as well.

The plan is for Red Hat to be the OS on the PC, auto logon and load VM Player straight away, which will down load an image and make it appear as much as possible that the user is in fact using an XP machine.

Any experience with this kind of approach?

Cheers

GDM supports auto-login, as does KDM I think.

When ever you set the 'Enable Automatic Login' option in GDM, will the Login GUI appear at all? I've tried testing from Red Hat installation on VMWare Workstation but it keeps dropping the user names I add, I'm assuming that's because I'm running it from a virtual image....

I was able to set in GDM, forgot to add the users in etc/passwd to the list of available accounts for auto login, my bad!

I'm also assuming that's why it didn't work in VMWare, lessons....
