Question built linux into CF card

Hello! this is my fisrt time using linux. I interest in embedded system and i like to ask about linux as a real time OS. Someone can help me to built linux kernel using busybox or voyage or other linux OS for my embedded PC.

Hopefully i can know step by step to create the linux kernel and i can run my C and C++ application and able to communicate with serial and ethenet.

What i like to know is:

1. Preparation for built linux kernel like we must u linux OS to create the kernel.
2. step should i follow for configuration inside the CF card.

This is my problem because i never familiar with linux. Hopefully someone can help me to solve my problem or you can give me the URL for my reference.

The answer is fairly dependent on the hardware you are running on. Yes, you probably will want to have a system with Linux running on it in order to build a kernel. If someone else has build Linux to run on your embedded device, I'd suggest you use it. If this is a device that's no one has ever put Linux on before, you may be in for a lot of work.

Worst case, you might have to modify the C++ compiler to generate code for your cpu, you might have to write device drivers for your hardware you might even have to modify the kernel to exist on some strange memory model your device is using. This isn't a project for the faint at heard, possible.

Jim.

AFAIK one can put a Linux into a Compact Flash card just like a USB jump drive or a SDHC card. It is pretty slow though.

Just format it as a hard disk and install the Linux there. The wheel has been invented.

Thank you to all of you have join my discussion. My purpose using linux is

1. The os is free compare with XP embedded and CE.NET Embedded. Both software from microsoft.
2. I like developed my system using C and C++ communicate with serial port or in linux tyyS0
3. The linux kernel must not be 50 MB space using, thats why we call embedded system
4. I have done using puppy linux but the OS still more then 50MB
5. I only used embedded PC 500MHz and 128 MB memory.
6. CF(Compact Flash) card Become like a Hard Disk
7. In software development i thing no the problem, the problem just from the OS.

Thank You
