BSD vs Linux..what are the differences?
 

I'm thinking about trying out PCBSD..which I guess is suppose to be a userfriendly bsd OS. Anyway, what exactly is different witb BSD compared to linux? Is there any major diferences? Anything I should know before installing? I've used several different flavors of linux..but never BSD.

and posting on FreeBSD forum ^_^. The differences on the surface are superficial (I mean, configuring, editing, installing) but when you go down the path near the kernel, you will find BSD way of doing things is more logical, more secure and more Unix-like then Linux.

If you want a friendly FreeBSD try freesbie. It's a liveCD, but can be installed on the harddrive as well. But if you manage to install FreeBSD (which is no harder then Slackware), the handbook will be your best friend. 99% of what you ever are going to ask is answered there:

For a Slack user there is nothing to be afraid of. Just give it a try. AFAIK PCBSD is still beta, FreeBSD may be a little better choice. It's up to you. There is an excellent Handbook for FreeBSD, a must reading. After that - it's a piece of cake. I find FreeBSD easier to manage than Linux, but this is my personal opinion. I would not recommend FreeBSD for a workstation although that can be argueable. If you want something similar to FreeBSD for desktop use, I would go with gentoo. Amazing portage system.

*BSD are usually amazingly secure for servers but lack support for some hardware and I don't think they are ready for the desktop yet.

It's interesting. Most (all?) of the comparisons between FreeBSD and Linux I've seen are heavily biased towards BSD. It makes me wonder how much of that is criticizing the non-Slack aspects of Linux (Red Hat, KDE, people who don't want to know what's really going on with their systems, etc.) and what real advantages a Linux distro like Slack has over BSD.

Feed your curiosity and find out ;)

As noted this has been gone over quite a bit, and there are a multitude of "*BSD vs *nix" around to check out, therefore I'll close this thread. But really, the best way to actually know the difference is to take the plunge and administer a BSD station and a Linux station to get a good feel for the comparisons and see which one suits you more.
