Browsing for Hidden files with GNOME apps

Several of the GNOME apps I use like file roller and gedit use the same dialog to browse for files or folders to open or select, etc. How can I configure this dialog window to allow me to browse the hidden folders and files? I haven't been able to find a preference like in Nautilus to allow this.
Thanks.

in the "extract to" dialogue box,
right click in empty part of window
go to View> Show Hidden Files

With file roller:
I don't have an archive with hidden folders in it yet to see if the "extract to " option works.
I am trying to get past the "add" part. When I try to add new folders to a new archive, the dialog window browser doesn't show hidden folders. Unselecting the "exclude hidden files"
doesn't seem to help. No hidden folders or files are displayed the selection.
This "problem" is the same for the open file selection dialog with gedit.

hmm
i'm not familiar with file roller but with Ark you can click on Add Files, and in the dialogue box that comes up, right click in the window and choose "show hidden files"
