Browser problem
 

I have a EeePC 4Gig running Linux version Zandrox.
I am unable to upgrade the firefox version and have problems as a result. When I download the new version of firefox, the download/installation fails. Is there a better browser that I should use?

First of all welcome to LQ. As to your problem, you're not offering much to go on.
I think you'll agree that the above statement is rather vague. How exactly did you download the upgrade. Are you using a package manager? Did you get it from the Mozilla website? Downloading and installing are two different processes. If the download failed, then I don't see how the installation could fail since there would be nothing to install. You see the problem. So please, try to walk us through what you did and how your system responded. Take it from the beginning.

are you sure that upgrading firefox is the solution to your problem?
what sort of problem?
what firefox version are you running now?

however, do not attempt to install software the way you did on windows.
on linux, you use an application that is on your computer, called a "software package manager" or "software center" to un/install and update "packages" = "programs".

what distro are you using?

Since Xandros is discontinued the better solution would be to install another distribution. There are many members that own EeePCs including me and I run debian.

WOW! Thanks for all the responses.

I don't have any option in "software package Manager" for the browser, so I tried downloading from the firefox website. the download window showed "download/Install" and the result was failure.
My Firefox is 2.0.0.11 dating from 2007 and I have never been able to upgrade it. I am also a dummy about linux (obviously!).
michaelk, it sounds like you have the best answer for me.
Would you be willing to help me with a "Dummie's" step-by-step of downloading & installing Debian?
I had wondered if ubuntu is an option, but as no one has mentioned it I suppose it is too big?

Yes, you can also install ubuntu, mint with lxde is another option.

You can use a SD card for /home or just data to min filling up the SSD.

I sold my eeepc's. The firefox download failed because the libs in Xandros are too old to support a modern firefox.

Use the 32bit full iso. You can pick Debian stable, testing, or unstable repositories during the install process.

sounds like these eeepc's are somewhat dated and low-spec? also small screen, iirc?
so, don't just install any mainstream desktop distro, it would most probably be too heavy.
go for lightweight, old hardware and maybe tailored for small screens.
distrowatch is your friend.

the best is some tutorial for technical specialties of eeepc.

I used to be a moderaror at eeepc forums before it died off.
That link above are the Isos for eeepcs uploaded by former members of that forum.
Xandros which you are running is based on Debian Etch. Which is very old and the libraries (libs) are not current
enough to support installing current available software.

You would even be better off installing even Puppy Linux on your 701 than Xandros. One I would consider is Carolina Puppy Linux 1.2.

There are many routes/roads you can travel on that 701 4gig Celeron 512MB ram netbook.
My 701SD that I had was tricked out enough with Puppy Linux Slack0 5.7 with Netflix,Skype,latest Seamonkey,Latest Firefox, Flash, Java, Libreoffice,that the person buying it was happy to give me the the money I asked for it.

Linux runs fast, runs good on the 701. Just take your time. Do your research before starting. You even have the recovery iso links now in case you give up. But if this GED biker can tweak a 701. You can to.
They are very Linux friendly.

I've got Puppy (can't remember which version now though) on my EeePC 701 4Gb as there isn't much space by today's standards. It all worked fine if I remember, including the WiFi. I haven't fired it up in a while now though. :)
