Brother MFC-J5910DW/scanner
As I am new in the Linux-community please accept my limmited knowlegde. This is my question: I bought the all-in-one a few weeks ago. The installation wasn't a disaster, but it took me some time. I am so far that the printer works. But the scanner doesn't I installed all the scanner drivers Shown on the Brothersupportsite. I checked if they were propperly installed with Synaptic Packagemanager and as far as I can see, that was the case. The scannerprogram says: No scanners found; so does the Xsaneprogram. The Brother all-in-one gives me the advice to control the cabel. Assumably the machine thinks a cabel is needed. I dont understand that, whereas the printer works quite well on wifi. You'll understand that I can use help!

Did you follow the directions that are found here? You're using CUPS and have installed the ppd file, correct?

Hi, Thanks for yout swift reaction. I found installation-instructions that were different from those on the site you gave the link for. The best thing to do is to install the driver all over again, I guess. I'll let you know the result as soon as I have done that.

Ok. Be sure to let us know how you made out.

First of all I am trying to find out what the cause is that the link you gave me, shows different instruction. Could it be that as I am got them from another -European- site?

That's the download page & yes there are different ways to install software.
What OS are you using, is it debian based? Because ubuntu & debian use dpkg. |
I am using Linux Mint 16 (Petra);debian.
I made a mess of it. I just now lost the printer. My next step is to uninstall all the printer/scanner driverfiles and start all over again. I did install all the printer- and scannerfiles listed on the Brother downloadsite. I don't think that was a good thing to do. This time I'll do it the other way around and install as few files as possible starting with the printerdriver: cupswrapperfile. As far as I can see it will do no harm if I install all of the three scannerdriver files, but still I'll do the same thing here. |
cupswrapperfile is more difficult than cdealing with a ppd file

Looked for that file, Eddy, but couldn't find it. But it won be necessary. Both printer and scanner work now. I followed the exact procedure, starting with this link http://support.brother.com/g/b/produ...mfcj5910dw_all
I clicked on Downloads, then on Linux, then on deb and on Search. A list of files followed. As I don't use the fax and have no need for the source code, I downloaded only the driver installer tool, 2 printer driver files en 3 scanner driver 32bit files. I started the installation with the Driver Install tool. All the files I downloaded, were in the map Downloads. The instructions that Brother gave, gave me some problems. I had to go there, buth the commandline cd /home/joep/Downloads wouldn't work. I had to try a dozen times before it succeeded. In the next two commandlines you have to leave 'Command:' out; the way it is written is confusing. Don't forget to change the asterisks/hypfen in numbers; in my case 2.0.0.-1. In the second commandline I had to change 'Brother machine name' in 'MFC-J5910DW'; so only the modelnumber is needed. The installation of the drivers is all done by the installer tool. A few times I had to make a choice: y/n. And as I am a network user I had to fill in the IP number/adress of the printer: something like 333.333.1.1 When I had to do that the first time I first had to make a choice out of a list of 12. I my case it was 11: Specify IP adress. As a result of all this printer and scanner are working. I learned that you have to work in a very precise way with Linux; everything has to be in the right place and the commandlines must be very accurate. Still I have one problem. Since the installation is finished I wanted to close the Terminal. In doing so a popup showed up advising me not to close because there is still an active proces running. So I didn't close the Terminal. Eight hours later the situation is still the same. Do one of you guy have a solution for this problem? |
